To officially operate as a Home Improvement Company in Massachusetts, a Home Improvement Contractor license must be obtained. Commonly referred to as a HIC license, these certifications allow companies to complete a wide range of renovation work. This includes repairs, improvements, updates and more. Such licenses are not applicable to new construction work, and many companies that perform basic installation are also exempt from requiring a HIC license.
Obtaining a HIC license in Massachusetts is not a difficult process. First, a formal application must be obtained. These forms are available by request online through the Massachusetts government website. It is important to be thorough and accurate when filling out the form, providing all necessary information. Any errors in the form may complicate the application process and may even prevent approval in some cases.
The application form is the most time consuming element of the application process. However, other paperwork must be provided. In particular, all applicants must provide evidence that the business seeking approval is registered with the Secretary of State's Office or a local City Clerk's office. Applications without this paperwork attached will not be processed or approved.
All HIC licenses will also require some form of payment. A flat 100 dollar fee is applied to all applicants in order to covering processing. Applicants will also be required to provide a payment to the Guaranty Fund. This amount will vary depending on the number of employees the business has. The lowest amount is 100 dollars, which applies to companies with three or less employees. The maximum payment amount is 500 dollars, which is levied against companies with over 30 employees.
All payment must be made out to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and sent with the application paperwork. Payment can be completed with a bank check or money order. No cash payments are currently accepted. It is important to note that all applications must be submitted via the mail because there is no walk-in service available when applying for a HIC license. Processing may take up to four weeks, and an approved license will be mailed to the business upon completion.
After being approved for a HIC license, companies will be officially registered with the state. This allows potential clients to double-check a business's credentials. HIC licenses must be renewed periodically in order to stay current with state requirements. A HIC license should not be confused with a Construction Supervisor's license, or CLS, which is needed for companies completing new construction projects. CLS licenses require more extensive testing than a HIC, which means that a HIC is far more accessible.
By following this process for a HIC license in Massachusetts, businesses can bolster their credibility and protect their assets.
